Does God ever get bored?

Imagine that you’re the richest, most powerful and most beautiful person on earth and you know everything that there is to know – but have no one around you.  How would you feel?

Many of us often wonder – if God is in heaven, what is he doing up there? Just sitting around judging people who die? Listening to and answering ‘god’zillion prayers each day? Constantly hear a bunch of angels sing hymns all day and night? If that’s true, God must be really bored.

Indian spiritual texts, such as Shrimad Bhagavatam give us a very different vision of the spiritual world not just as ‘heaven’ but a world filled with joy and mirth. They tell us, “GOD LOVES FUN!”

Whether we humans can comprehend it or not, the book reveals that God loves to enjoy loving relationships with others who love him back as his devotees as parents, friends or lovers.

These texts reason that though God is self-satisfied, is present everywhere (omnipresent), he can do whatever he want (omnipotent) and he knows everything (omniscient), he still looks for deep loving relationships so that he never gets ‘bored’.

Though he is the master of everything, there’s one thing he cannot get because he happens to be God – and that’s our love for him, bhakti. Pure love cannot be forced or manipulated out of someone, it has to be spontaneous. And even though God has everything, he cannot force love out of us, for that wouldn’t be pure love.
When sacred texts like the Bhagavad Gita or the Bhagavatam explain that Krishna – the Supreme loving being – is having fun, with his friends, we know God cannot be bored – He loves fun!
